The question of whether you need GTO at low stakes deserves an honest answer, and that answer is: largely no. At NL2 to NL10 your profit is not decided by how close you play to the theoretical equilibrium, but by how fast you close your big leaks and how consistently you exploit other people's mistakes. What GTO solves, and what your problem is
GTO, short for game theory optimal, is an equilibrium strategy that protects you against opponents who see through your game and attack it. The full explanation is in what is GTO poker. Now look honestly at your tables at NL5: is there anybody there tracking your frequencies and developing a targeted counter? Almost certainly not. You are then paying the price of insurance against a risk that hardly exists at your stake.
Where the money comes from at these stakes
Profit at NL2 to NL10 comes from a few big, boring sources: playing tight and aggressively while the rest play too many hands, taking thick value with strong hands against players who pay everything, and folding in time against players who only bet with the winning hand. None of those sources asks for solver knowledge. They ask for discipline and for self knowledge: knowing which mistakes you still make yourself. The most common are in the biggest leaks at NL10, and the chances are you recognise at least two of them.
Work the difference out
Suppose perfect GTO knowledge earns you two big blinds per 100 hands extra at NL5 compared with a solid base strategy. One structural leak, such as systematically paying off on the river, easily costs you double that or more. Closing leaks returns a multiple per hour of study of what equilibrium study returns. Compare it with running: somebody who trains three times a week gets nothing out of a wind tunnel analysis of their form while their laces are still undone.

A few building blocks from equilibrium thinking are directly usable even at NL2. Solid preflop ranges per position, because those prevent the most expensive mistake of all: entering with too many hands. The awareness that your behaviour leaks information if you play strong and weak hands differently. And a rough feel for how often a bluff has to succeed to break even. Close your big leaks first, with hand reviews and targeted practice. Then build a solid base strategy you can execute without thinking. Next, learn to read and exploit your opponents. Only once you beat NL25 or higher and notice the field reacting to you does deep GTO study become the logical next step. Until then the rule holds: the field gives its money to whoever executes the basics best, not to whoever knows the prettiest frequencies.
