Range visualizer.
A range written as text is hard to argue with because it is hard to picture. Type it here and it becomes a shape. Put a second range next to it and the part you were disagreeing about turns purple.

reading the grid
169 squares, 1,326 hands.
The diagonal holds the pocket pairs. Above it are the suited hands, below it the offsuit ones. That layout is the standard everywhere, which is why a range drawn on it is readable at a glance by anyone who plays. What the layout hides is weight. A pocket pair can be dealt 6 ways, a suited hand 4 ways and an offsuit hand 12 ways, so the bottom left of the grid carries three times the weight per square that the top right does. Ace king suited is four hands. Ace king offsuit is twelve. Every count on this page is in combinations for that reason, never in squares.
The notation is compact and worth learning properly. A plus means this hand and everything stronger of the same shape, so A2s+ is every suited ace and KJo+ is only king jack and king queen offsuit. A dash marks a band, so 77-99 is three pairs and A5s-A9s is five suited aces. Commas separate the parts. If a piece of notation is wrong the tool ignores that piece rather than guessing at it, so an empty patch usually means a typo. The words for all this, from range to blocker, are in the glossary.
The percentage button fills in the strongest hands until it reaches the share you asked for, using a common Sklansky style ordering that is written out in full in the page source. Be careful with the edge of it. Sources disagree about where small pairs sit against suited aces, and about suited connectors against offsuit broadways, so a top 20 percent range from one book is not identical to a top 20 percent range from another. Use it to compare widths, not to settle arguments about a single hand. For ranges that were built for a specific spot rather than a percentage, the range charts and the preflop chart are the better starting point.
Drawing a range is only half of what you came for. The other half is what it is worth against your hand, and a wide range full of offsuit junk plays very differently from a narrow one even when the two percentages look similar. Put a range and a hand into the equity calculator and you get the number instead of the impression, which is also what tells you whether the price you are being offered is one you should take.
what a few common ranges actually weigh
| Range | Notation | Combinations | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| All pocket pairs Thirteen squares on the diagonal and nothing else. | 22+ | 78 | 5.9% |
| Every suited ace Twelve squares, and far fewer hands than most people assume. | A2s+ | 48 | 3.6% |
| A tight opening range What an early position raise looks like at a full table. | 99+, AJs+, KQs, AKo | 64 | 4.8% |
| A button opening range Wide, because there are only two players left to get through. | 22+, A2s+, K7s+, Q9s+, J9s+, T9s, 98s, A8o+, KTo+, QJo | 298 | 22.5% |
| A big blind calling range Wider still, because the price of calling is already discounted. | 22+, A2s+, K5s+, Q8s+, J8s+, T8s, 97s+, 87s, 76s, A8o+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo | 350 | 26.4% |
Every pocket pair is thirteen squares and only 5.9 percent of all hands. Every suited ace is twelve squares and 3.6 percent. Both feel like a lot at the table and neither is. That gap between how a range looks and how often it is actually dealt is the reason this grid exists.

A range you invented is not a range you should play.
This page draws whatever you type, including nonsense. What it cannot tell you is which hands belong in an opening range from under the gun, or how much wider that gets on the button. Those are worked out per position and per stack depth, and they are worth comparing against whatever you have been doing.
range questions
What is a poker range?
The set of hands a player can have in a given spot, rather than the single hand you imagine him with. Thinking in ranges is what separates guessing from reasoning: you cannot know he has ace king, but you can work out how much of what he would raise here beats what you hold.
How do you read range notation?
A plus means this hand and everything stronger of the same shape. So 22+ is every pocket pair, A2s+ is every suited ace, and KJo+ is king jack offsuit and king queen offsuit. A dash gives a band: 77-99 is sevens, eights and nines, and A5s-A9s is the suited aces from ace five up to ace nine. Separate the parts with commas.
How many hand combinations are there in Texas Holdem?
There are 1,326 of them, and only 169 squares on the grid. Each pocket pair is 6 combinations, each suited hand is 4, and each offsuit hand is 12. That is why a range made of offsuit hands is much wider than a grid with the same number of squares filled in suited.
What does a 15 percent range mean?
Fifteen percent of all 1,326 combinations, which is 200 of them once the tool has filled in whole hands. It is a measure of width, not of quality: two players can both open 15 percent and hold very different hands. The percentage button on this page fills in the strongest hands until it reaches the share you asked for.
Is the top percentage ordering exact?
No, and no ordering is. Sources disagree about the marginal hands, especially small pairs against suited aces and suited connectors against offsuit broadways. The ordering this tool uses is a common Sklansky style ranking and it is written out in full in the page source. Treat the edge of a percentage range as an approximation and the middle of it as solid.
Can I build a range by clicking?
Yes. Click any square to add or remove it, then press copy as notation and the tool writes your selection back as tidy shorthand you can paste anywhere. The share button puts both ranges in the address bar, so a link is enough to show someone what you mean.
