Hand types and share of hands are two different measurements, and they never match. A pair is one of the 169 types but only six of the 1,326 combinations, while an offsuit hand is one type and twelve combinations. The right hand column is the one to compare ranges with.

where these ranges come from

Conventional ranges, counted honestly.

These five ranges are rules of thumb. They sit close to what standard poker literature and the charts that circulate in every forum have recommended for a decade, rounded to whole hands so a grid stays readable. They are not solver output. A solver answers a narrower question, changes its answer when the stack depth or the raise size changes, and plays the same hand two ways at a set frequency, which is not something a single coloured square can express.

The percentages are exact, because they are counted from the grids on this page rather than quoted from anywhere. The ranges are not exact, and the places where they are softest are visible in the charts themselves: the ragged edge of the suited hands, the smallest pairs, and the offsuit broadway hands in the bottom left. Reasonable sources move those cells by one step in either direction. None of them move AA, and none of them play 72o.

The assumptions behind all five: six players, 100 big blinds each, cash game, nobody has raised before you, and a standard opening raise. Change any one of those and the chart shifts. That is a limit of charts, not a flaw in these ones.

how to use them

Find your seat, find your hand, do what the cell says, and then stop. That is the whole instruction, and the hard part of it is the stopping: a chart covers one decision and the hand has three more betting rounds in it. If those rounds are not yet familiar, the order of play from preflop to river is worth reading before the grids are.

Position is why these five charts differ, and it is the concept underneath all of them. Under the gun, five players can still find a better hand than yours. On the button, only two can, and you get to watch both of them act first on every street that follows. Acting last is worth more than most starting hands, which is the sentence these charts are drawn from.

Two neighbours to this page fill in what it leaves out. When someone has already raised and the question is whether to call or three bet, you need a range chart for defending and three betting. And when the grid still looks like an arbitrary pattern, going one step back to the strength order of all 169 starting hands usually makes the shape of these five click. All of it assumes you know which five card hands beat which, which is the one thing in poker worth memorising outright.

What is a preflop chart?

A grid of all 169 starting hands that tells you which ones to raise with before any community card is dealt, given the seat you are sitting in. Preflop is the first betting round in Texas Hold'em, when you have seen only your own two cards. It is the decision you face most often and the one a chart can answer best.

Why is there a different chart for every position?

Because the number of players who can still beat you changes. Under the gun there are five opponents left to act, so this chart opens 14.2% of hands. On the button there are two, and you act last for the rest of the hand, so that chart opens 45.1%. Same cards, same table, three times the range.

Do these charts assume nobody has raised yet?

Yes. All five cover the situation where the action folds to you and you are first into the pot. Once someone has raised, the question changes from which hands to open into which hands are strong enough to continue against a raise, and that needs a different chart.

Why is there no chart for the big blind?

Because there is no such thing as opening from the big blind. If everyone folds to you there, the hand is already over and you keep the pot. Your decisions in that seat are always answers to somebody else's raise.

How exact are these percentages?

The arithmetic is exact and the ranges are not. Each percentage is counted straight from the grid beside it, out of the 1,326 two card combinations in the deck: six per pair, four per suited hand, twelve per offsuit hand. The ranges themselves are conventional rules of thumb rounded to whole hands, so treat the border cells as approximate and the corners as settled.

Should I use these charts in a tournament?

For the early levels, when everyone still has a deep stack, they are close enough. As the blinds grow and stacks drop under about twenty big blinds, opening and folding stops being the right frame at all, because most raises become all in decisions. That is a different chart and a different calculation.
