how these pages were written
Everywhere else on this site we can check our own work: a hand either evaluates correctly or it does not. Here we are writing about events, people and amounts, and a wrong one reads exactly like a right one. So there are four rules, and they are at the top rather than the bottom.
No date, amount, title or name without a source
Every page in this section names the pages it was written from and the day we read them. Where we could not read a figure at a source we could check, the figure is missing and the page says so.
Where sources disagree, we say so
Two of the famous hands have different suits depending on which source you read, and the largest online pot is printed one dollar apart by two sites. Those disagreements are on the pages rather than quietly resolved in favour of whichever looked neater.
Four hands beat twelve stories
Famous hands and record pots attract numbers that circulate without ever having been true. A short page of things we could verify is worth more than a long page of things that sound right, and every list here is shorter than it could have been.
We describe, we do not retell
For films and books we give what a source states and an opinion clearly marked as one. No plot summaries written from memory, no quotations from songs, scripts or books. The nearest we come to quoting anything is naming it.
The same discipline governs the integrity section, where we also write down which figures we could not verify. Where these pages touch strategy they hand off rather than improvise: to tells from the poker face page, to the learning section from the books page, and to the rules from the history of the game.

Why does every page here list its sources?
Because this is the only part of the site that makes claims about the real world, and the real world is where invented details are hardest to spot. A wrong year or a wrong amount reads exactly like a right one. Naming the source and the date we read it is the only way to let you check.

With poker face if you arrived looking for the meaning of the phrase, since that is the single most common reason people come to this part of the site. With the history page if you want the game itself, and with famous hands if you want the moments.
Is any of this strategy?
No. Nothing in this section will make you play better, and it is not trying to. The learning section is where the strategy lives, and several pages here link into it where the two subjects touch.
Why are the lists on these pages so short?
Because they contain only what we could verify. Five films, five books, five hands, seven pots. Longer lists were possible and would have meant printing things we had read only in summaries of summaries, which is precisely how bad figures spread.
