how it counts
Every runout, or a stated number of them.
Equity against one specific hand is a counting problem with no cleverness in it. List every set of community cards the deck can still produce, work out who wins on each, and your equity is the share you win plus half the share you split. There is nothing to estimate. On the river there is one runout. On the turn there are 44. On the flop there are 990. Before the flop there are 1,712,304, which a browser still counts in well under a second.
A range changes the size of the problem, not the idea. The notation is expanded into individual combinations, any combination needing a card you can already see is dropped, and the remainder are treated as equally likely. Your equity is then the average across all of them. But a range of 40 hands before the flop means 40 times 1,712,304 runouts, and at that point counting every one stops being reasonable. So this page counts everything while the job is under 4,000,000 runouts, and above that it draws 1,500,000 random ones instead. It always tells you which of the two it did, and when it sampled, it prints the margin of error beside the answer. A number you cannot check is worse than a slower one.
Two limits are worth stating out loud. The first is the equal weighting: a real opponent three bets ace king more often than he three bets ace jack, and this model does not know that. The second is that equity is not a decision. A hand with 35 percent equity is a call at one price and a fold at another, which is what the pot odds calculator is for. If you want the exact figure against two, three or four named hands rather than a range, that is a different counting job and the odds calculator enumerates it in full.
Building the range is the part that takes judgement, and it is worth doing carefully rather than typing the first thing that comes to mind. The range visualizer draws whatever you type so you can see the shape of it, and the preflop chart shows what a reasonable player opens from each seat. If the ranking of the hands themselves is not yet automatic, that comes first: the order of poker hands is what the counting is comparing.

Multiply the last column by the number of hands in the range and you have the size of the job. That product is what decides whether this page counts or samples.

The margin is 1.96 standard errors, and the standard error is at its largest when the answer is near 50 percent, so these are the worst cases. At 1,500,000 runouts the second decimal is still moving and the first one is not, which is why the result is shown to one decimal with the interval printed underneath it.

You hold and he has three bet you. Against pocket queens alone you are close to a flip. Against a range of queens, kings and aces you are worse off, because two thirds of that range has you dominated and none of it is folding. Against a range of queens, kings, aces and ace king you climb back, because now a large slice of it is the hand you hold and you split. Same cards, three answers, and the only thing that changed was what you assumed about him. That is the argument for typing a range instead of a hand.

Equity is half a decision.
Knowing you win 38 percent of the time settles nothing on its own. The other half is what you are being charged, and the two only mean something held against each other. That comparison takes about a minute to learn and it is the single most useful piece of arithmetic at a poker table.

What is equity in poker?
Your share of the pot if the hand were dealt to the river from here, written as a percentage. Sixty percent equity means that across every card that can still come, you end up with the best hand sixty percent of the time, counting a split as half. It says nothing about whether you should bet or call; it is one of the two numbers those decisions need, the other being the price.
How do you calculate equity against a range?
Work out your equity against every single hand in the range and average the results. This calculator does exactly that: it expands the notation into individual card combinations, throws away the ones that need a card you can already see, and treats the rest as equally likely. That last assumption is the one to remember, because a real opponent does not hold every hand in his range equally often.
Is this calculator exact or a simulation?
Both, depending on the size of the job, and it always says which one it used. If the number of possible runouts is small enough it counts every one of them and the answer is exact to the last decimal. If it is not, it draws random runouts instead and shows the margin of error next to the result, so you can see how much of the last decimal to believe.
What is the difference between equity and pot odds?
Equity is how often you win. Pot odds are how much you are being charged to find out. A call is profitable when the first is bigger than the second, and neither number means anything alone. This page answers the first; the pot odds calculator answers the second and puts them together.
Why did my equity change when I typed a board?
Because three cards remove a great deal of uncertainty. Ace king before the flop is about 43 percent against a pair of queens, but on a flop with an ace it is over 90 percent, and on a flop with a queen it is somewhere between 2 and 6 percent depending on the suits. Preflop equity is an average over every flop, most of which never happen.
