GTO vs exploitative: two ways of thinking, and at your stake there is usually a clear winner.

The GTO vs exploitative argument turns up in every poker forum, and usually with far too much certainty. The short version: GTO is a defensive strategy, exploitative play is an attacking strategy. Which of the two earns you the most depends mainly on who is sitting opposite you. At low stakes that answer is surprisingly clear cut.

What GTO actually promises

GTO stands for game theory optimal, a strategy so balanced that opponents can think of nothing to use against it. If you play perfectly according to that equilibrium, there is nothing to be earned from you in the long run, whatever your opponent tries. Above all remember this: GTO does not maximise your profit against weak players, it minimises your loss against strong ones.

What exploitative play does

Playing exploitatively means deliberately deviating from equilibrium to take advantage of your opponent's mistakes. If somebody folds too often to a c-bet, the standard bet from the player who raised before the flop, you bet more often with weak hands. If somebody pays every bet with any pair, you simply never bluff him again and bet thickly with your strong hands. Every adjustment earns money directly, precisely because the other player's mistake persists as long as he does not notice it.

Why exploitative wins at low stakes

At NL2 to NL25 your opponents make big, repeatable mistakes: playing too many hands, calling too much, practically never bluffing on the river. Against mistakes like that an equilibrium strategy is a waste of your edge. A simple example: if an opponent never bluffs, your GTO answer of paying him off sometimes anyway is pure waste, because folding wins there every time. When GTO is worth your time

Climb to higher stakes and the playing field changes. Regulars watch your frequencies, adjust and punish transparent deviations. There a solid equilibrium base becomes your safety net: you know your strategy is not leaky, and you only deviate with a good reason. Even at low stakes, by the way, knowing GTO has one big use: it gives you a yardstick. Without an idea of what a normal folding frequency is, you cannot establish that somebody folds too often.

The practical middle road

Play a simple, solid base strategy that sits roughly in the direction of equilibrium. Observe your opponents actively, and deviate as soon as you see a concrete mistake: value betting wider against calling stations, folding more often against players who never bluff, stealing more from players who give up their blinds. That way you get the best of both worlds, without having to learn hours of solver output by heart.

Can I combine GTO and exploitative play? +

Yes, and that is exactly what good players do. You use a solid base strategy as your starting point and deviate from it deliberately as soon as you see a clear mistake in your opponent. The bigger and more certain the mistake, the further you deviate.

Is playing exploitatively not risky? +

Every deviation from the equilibrium strategy makes you attackable too. At low stakes that risk is small, because your opponents rarely notice your adjustments and even more rarely react to them. Against strong, attentive players it does become a real danger.

From which stake does GTO become important? +

There is no hard boundary, but roughly from NL100 upwards, and certainly in games with many regulars, you start to notice that big deviations get punished. Below that you almost always earn more with sharp exploitative play than with replaying solver output.

Should I skip GTO entirely then? +

No. A rough understanding of equilibrium thinking actually helps you recognise other people's mistakes: you can only see that somebody folds too often if you know how often folding would be normal. Use GTO as a yardstick, not as a script.
