Ask any serious poker player what the #1 skill is after the first few months of learning and the answer is nearly unanimous: position. Not hand reading. Not bet sizing. Position.
Why position decides everything
Position is the order in which you act. Whoever acts last has a mathematical advantage. Proven by billions of hands of data: players in late position consistently win more per 100 hands than players in early position, regardless of skill level.
Why? Three reasons:
- Information. When you act, you know what everyone before you has done.
- Pot control. You can keep the pot small with marginal hands and grow it with value.
- Bluff frequency. You can bluff in spots where your opponent has shown weakness.
The 4 position groups

The open range nearly doubles from EP to LP. Not a "preference", a mathematical necessity. From the BTN you have 3 players left (SB, BB, you). From UTG there are 5 players behind you who can 3-bet or call you.
Examples per position
Example 1 · UTG
UTG: AJo, FOLD
Why: AJo looks strong, but with 5 players behind you it gets 3-bet a lot and plays dominated. AJs is a marginal open, AJo is a fold from UTG.
Example 2 · CO
CO: 87s, OPEN 2.5bb
Why: The same hand from UTG = fold. From the CO = standard open. Reason: only BTN, SB and BB behind you. You get fold equity preflop, and when called you have position postflop.
Example 3 · BTN
BTN: K7o, OPEN 2.5bb
Why: K7o is a trash hand in a vacuum. But from the BTN with only SB+BB behind you, you often simply win the blinds preflop (~40% of the time). And when called, you have position for the whole hand.
Common mistakes
Mistake 01
Opening the same range from every position
"I have AJ, so I open." No. AJ from UTG = marginal. AJ from BTN = strong open. The hand does not change, but your expected win per BB does.
Mistake 02
Limping from late position
From the BTN or CO, open-limping is almost never correct. You give away your positional advantage by not being the aggressor. Raise or fold.
Mistake 03
Calling too much from the blinds
SB and BB are the worst positions postflop. Calling a raise produces losing pots in which you sit out of position 60 to 70 percent of the time with a mediocre range. Standard line: 3-bet or fold.
Mistake 04
Not extracting extra value from position
IP does not just mean "I can call with more hands". It means betting thin for value, checking for pot control, and bluffing at your opponent's weak spots. Use your position actively.
