Why deciding last is worth gold, and how to cash in that advantage every hand.
Imagine you were allowed to see what your opponent does at every decision, and only then choose. That is not a hypothetical advantage, it is exactly what position is. Whoever decides last plays every street with more information, and in poker information is literally money.
What the advantage delivers concretely
You steer the pot. If your opponent checks, you choose: seeing the next card for free with a middling hand, or betting with a strong one. Without position you rarely have that choice.
You lose less when things go against you. If he bets, you know straight away where you stand and can get out cheaply. The player without position finds that out only after already putting money in the pot.
You win more when things go your way. With a strong hand in position you set the pace and the size of every bet. That is why the same hand is simply worth more on the button than early at the table, and why your playable starting hand selection grows the later you sit.
The blinds: paid to walk into the trap
The two blinds feel like a head start, after all you have already paid, but they are the only seats where you play the whole hand out of position. The discount in the big blind is real, only smaller than it feels: every dollar you add there, you play from the worst chair at the table. Throwing away borderline cases from the blinds is one of the cheapest improvements there is.

What exactly is position in poker? +
The order in which you act. Whoever decides last after the flop has position: you see what everybody does first and only then decide. The button has the best position for the whole hand; the blinds the worst.
Why is the button the best seat at the table? +
Because there you always decide last after the flop. Every street you get everybody's information first, you can give up cheaply when things go against you, and steer the pot when they go your way. That is why players on the button win the most structurally, at every level.
How much does position really make? +
More than almost any other factor. Measured across large numbers of hands, players win with the same hands from the button and lose with them from early position. The difference is not in the cards but in the information.
How do I play from the blinds? +
Carefully, and honestly with yourself: you are first to act for the whole hand. In the big blind you have a discount to take part, but a discount is no reason to defend every hand. Throwing away borderline cases makes the most difference in these two seats.
