What does a solver actually do?
A poker solver works out the equilibrium of one situation. Impressive, and still more limited than you think.
A poker solver is a program that works out the equilibrium strategy for a precisely described situation: the strategy against which no counter strategy exists. So a solver does not tell you how to win the most, but how to play unexploitably. That difference decides what such a program is and is not good for.
What you put into it
A solver starts with nothing. You define the situation: the two ranges, meaning all the hands each player can have at that moment, the pot size, the stack depths, the cards on the table and the bet sizes both players may choose. That last one is often forgotten: the result only holds within the options you gave it. Give the solver only a half pot bet and you will never discover that a small bet was better here.
How the calculation works
The solver then lets two virtual players play against each other endlessly. Player A picks a strategy, player B looks for the best answer to it, after which A adjusts to B again, and so on. Every round the strategies become a little less exploitable, until neither player can improve their result by doing something different. That point is called the equilibrium, and it is the heart of what GTO poker means. The solver stops as soon as the remaining difference is negligibly small.
What comes out
The output is not advice but a table of frequencies. For every hand in your range you see how often you bet, call or fold, often in mixtures: this hand bets 70 percent of the time and checks 30 percent. Alongside that you see the expected value of every choice at that equilibrium. The gain is not in replaying those percentages, but in the patterns behind them: which hand types like to bet, which turn cards reverse the roles, why certain bluffs work and others do not.
What a solver cannot do
A solver does not know your opponent. It assumes both players play perfectly, and at your stake nobody genuinely does. Against somebody who calls too much or never bluffs, deliberately deviating from the solver line is the profitable choice. How you make that judgement you can read in GTO or exploitative. So see the solver as a teacher for your study hours, not as an authority dictating every decision at the table.
How to use it sensibly
Pick one recurring situation, the c-bet for instance, the standard bet from the player who raised before the flop. Look at the solver solution, put into ordinary words why the solver does what it does, and boil that down into one rule of thumb you can remember at the table. One properly understood situation a week is worth more than ten tables you will have forgotten again by tomorrow.

Which solvers are there? +
Well known names are PioSOLVER, GTO Wizard and simple free versions for preflop situations. They differ in price and ease of use, but at heart they all calculate the same thing: an equilibrium strategy for a precisely defined situation.
Is a solver the same as GTO? +
Almost. A solver approximates the GTO solution of the game within the limits you set, such as the possible bet sizes. So the result is not a perfect truth, but a very good approximation of the equilibrium for that one scenario.
May I use a solver while playing? +
No. Practically every poker site bans tools that make or work out decisions for you during play. A solver is a study tool for after the session. Using it while you play can cost you your account.
Do I need a solver as a beginner? +
No. Solver output is only useful once you understand ranges, pot odds and positions properly; otherwise you just see a mush of percentages. Work on your basics and your biggest leaks first; a solver comes into view of its own accord after that.
