One table, one buy in, and a prize pool split between the top few finishers. That last part is the whole format. From the moment a payout comes into view, your chips stop being worth their face value, and every decision you make has to be priced in money rather than in chips.

Four players left, ten thousand chips on the table, and a pool that pays 50, 30 and 20 percent to the top three. Here is what each stack is actually worth, according to the independent chip model.

The leader holds half the chips and owns 37.8 percent of the money. The short stack holds a twentieth of the chips and owns 8.4 percent. Read that in the other direction and it is more useful: the short stack’s chips are worth well over their face value, and the leader’s are worth about three quarters of theirs. Nobody is being cheated. It is simply that first place pays once, and a big stack cannot be paid twice for the chips it has already accumulated.
what one all in really moves
Now let the short stack shove and win, doubling through the leader. Five hundred chips change hands, so the stacks become 4,500, 3,000, 1,500 and 1,000. Run the model again and the money moves like this: the short stack goes from 8.4 to 14.2 percent, a gain of 5.8 points, while the leader falls from 37.8 to 35.6, a loss of only 2.1.
The gain and the loss do not match, and the missing 3.7 points is the part worth understanding. It comes from the two players who were not in the hand at all: the second stack drops 1.3 points and the third drops 2.4, purely because a rival who was nearly eliminated is now a real threat. In a cash game that transfer is impossible. Here it happens on every all in, which is why running your own stacks through the ICM calculator is the fastest way to see what a hand is actually risking.
Two habits follow directly. First, calling an all in near the bubble needs more equity than the pot odds alone suggest, because busting costs you a payout you had almost secured. Second, if you are the one with chips to spare, pressure is close to free: the push fold calculator has the shoving ranges for short stack depths, and the correct response to them is tighter than a chip count suggests. If the table decides to split the remaining money instead of playing it out, the deal calculator prices that split the same way.
None of this applies before the money is in sight. Early in a sit and go, with nine players and the payouts far away, the model barely bends and chips are close enough to money that you can think in chips. The skill is noticing the moment that stops being true, and it is the same moment that decides the bubble of a multi table tournament, only with hundreds of players instead of nine.

What is a sit and go?
A tournament on a single table that starts as soon as enough players have registered, rather than at a fixed time. You pay one buy in, everyone begins with the same stack, and the top few finishers share the prize pool.
What is the best sit and go strategy?
Play tight while the blinds are small and the field is full, then switch. As players bust and a payout comes into view, the value of your chips stops matching their number, and survival starts to be worth money in its own right. Most of the edge in this format lives in that switch, not in the early hands.
What does ICM mean in a sit and go?
ICM converts a stack of chips into an expected share of the prize pool. It exists because you can only finish first once: doubling your chips does not double what you are owed, so a chip you win is worth less than a chip you lose costs. That gap is small at the start and large near the money.
How should you play the bubble in a sit and go?
Tighter than the chip maths alone suggests if you have a stack worth protecting, and much wider if you have a large one. The player who can bust others without busting himself is the only one at the table whose aggression is nearly free, and the short stacks pay for it.
Is a sit and go better than a cash game for beginners?
It is a gentler place to start for two reasons that have nothing to do with skill. The cost of the evening is fixed at the moment you enter, and there is only one table to follow. A cash game asks you to play deep stacks after the flop from the very first hand.
How many players get paid in a sit and go?
It depends on the table size and the operator, so read the lobby before you sit down rather than assuming. The number matters more than most people think: a structure paying three of nine and one paying two of six ask for completely different behaviour on the bubble.
