Drawing dead

You are drawing dead when no card still to come can give you the winning hand, so every chip you put in from that point cannot be won back.

It is not the same as being behind. Being behind means you need help and might get it. Drawing dead means the help does not exist anywhere in the remaining deck, whatever falls.

You almost never know it at the table, because you cannot see the other hand. What you can do is notice the boards where it becomes possible, which are the ones where a hand far stronger than yours is already available.

an example

your cards

board

You have kings full of eights, which is an enormous hand. Your opponent holds 8s Ac for four of a kind. There are 44 cards that can come on the river, and not one of them gives you the pot: even a king only makes kings full again. You are drawing dead.

This example is made up. The real one is in your own hand history: find drawing dead in your own hands and see how often it came up and what it cost you.
