Position

Position is where you sit relative to the button, and it decides whether you act before or after your opponent in every betting round after the flop.

Acting last is an information advantage that repeats on every street. You see whether they bet, how much and how quickly, before you have to commit anything, and they never get to see the same about you.

That is why the same two cards are worth more on the button than in the small blind, and why sensible opening ranges get wider the closer you sit to the button. Position is not a tiebreaker, it is one of the largest edges available to a player who is not yet studying anything else.

You hold queen jack and missed the flop. Out of position you have to act first with no information and usually check. In position you get to see their bet or their check first, and a check tells you enough to bet a hand that has nothing.

This example is made up. The real one is in your own hand history: find position in your own hands and see how often it came up and what it cost you.
