Under the gun
also called UTG
Under the gun is the seat immediately to the left of the big blind, which acts first before the flop and therefore has the most players still to come.
Everyone else gets to decide after seeing what you did, and at a nine handed table that is eight opponents. That is why the opening range here is the tightest at the table by a wide margin.
The seat is also poor after the flop, because it acts first against almost everyone who called. Hands that need position to be worth playing are not worth playing from here, however good they look.
an example
your cards
King jack offsuit is a comfortable raise on the button and a fold under the gun. Eight players are still to act, and the hands that call will mostly be better than yours and will mostly have position on you.
This example is made up. The real one is in your own hand history: find under the gun in your own hands and see how often it came up and what it cost you.
