Board texture
Board texture is how connected and how suited the shared cards are, which decides how many strong hands and draws are possible and therefore how much either player can bet.
A board where straights and flushes are available gives both ranges a great many strong hands, so bets get called and raised more often. A board where almost nothing connects gives neither player much, and whoever had the stronger range before the flop keeps it.
Texture is about ranges rather than about your hand. The same ace on a connected board and on a dry one is the same pair, and the number of hands that can beat it is not remotely the same.
