Heads up

Heads up means only two players are contesting the pot, or that the whole game is played between two players.

With one opponent instead of eight, the ranges widen enormously. There is no seat left to fold to, the blinds arrive every hand, and hands that would be discarded at a full table become normal raises.

In a heads up game the button posts the small blind and acts first before the flop and last after it, which is the reverse of the usual arrangement and the first thing to get used to.

an example

your cards

King four offsuit is a fold from early position at a nine handed table and a routine raise on the button heads up, because it only has to beat one random hand rather than survive eight of them.

This example is made up. The real one is in your own hand history: find heads up in your own hands and see how often it came up and what it cost you.
