Probe bet

A probe bet is a bet made out of position on the turn or river after the previous aggressor declined to bet the street before.

The check that came before it is the information. A player who raised before the flop and then chose not to bet is usually holding something they do not want to build a pot with, so the pot is often available to whoever asks for it.

The size can be small because it does not need to fold much. Betting a third of the pot into a range that has already given up wins often enough to be worth doing with hands that have no other way to win.

You called from the big blind, the raiser checked back the flop, and the turn gives you a pair of nines. Betting now takes the initiative from a player who has already shown they do not want it.

This example is made up. The real one is in your own hand history: find probe bet in your own hands and see how often it came up and what it cost you.
