Out of position
also called OOP
You are out of position when you have to act before your opponent on every betting round after the flop, which means committing money without knowing what they will do.
The disadvantage repeats on every street, which is why it compounds. Checking gives away the initiative, betting gives away information, and the opponent gets to make every decision knowing more than you did.
The practical response is to play fewer hands and to make the pot smaller with the marginal ones. Hands that need several streets of good decisions are worth much less here than the same cards with the button.

board
You flopped top pair from the big blind against a raiser. You have to act first on the flop, the turn and the river, and on every one of them the opponent gets to decide after seeing what you did.
This example is made up. The real one is in your own hand history: find out of position in your own hands and see how often it came up and what it cost you.
