Two hole cards are suited when they share a suit, which lets them make a flush together and raises the value of almost every starting hand.
Of the 1,326 possible starting hands, 312 are suited, which is 23.5%. Each specific suited hand is 4 combinations against 12 for the offsuit version of the same two ranks.
The gain is smaller than it feels and real enough to change decisions. A suited hand flops a flush draw 10.9% of the time and a made flush 0.8%, and the extra value comes as much from the hands you can continue with as from the flushes you complete.

Ace seven of hearts and ace seven offsuit are the same two ranks. The suited version can make the best possible flush, and that difference alone moves the hand from marginal to playable in several seats.
